Proplant Tyre Services recommend plant OTR tyre rotation to help even out tread wear and sidewall abrasion gained during everyday operation. This proactive maintenance will help to maximise tyre service life and reduce operating costs.

All OTR plant is heavy and carries exceptionally heavy payloads during operation. This affects tyre wear as the plant OTR tyres are repeatedly being put under stress and scraped in the same places, which generates excessive tyre wear in the associated areas.

For example, the drive tyres will always experience greater wear as they work harder. Machinery that carries its payload at the front will wear the front tyres faster than the rears. Some multimodal machines wear tyres more on one side, as the payload is carried in one direction before they return unladen. The tyres mounted on the rear most axle of a trailer will scrub the most during turns.

Tyre rotation on the same axle

Tyre rotation addresses uneven shoulder wear and excessive sidewall abrasion. To even out the wear the tyre is removed from the wheel rim, turned through 180° and remounted. This exposes the better condition sidewall to the outside position and will even out tread wear during operation.

Tyre rotation to a different axle

Another rotation technique is repositioning the tyre to another axle on machinery with single wheel assemblies. A tyre rotation from the higher wearing axle to the slower-wearing axle, as well as corner-to-corner swaps, will even out the differing rates of tread wear over time. This process is smarter than a wheel rotation as there is no need to retorque the wheel nuts.
